This is a blog post about a movie with English subtitles. The movie is called "Eternity" and was released in 2010. It has a 7 out of 10 rating on IMDB from those who have seen it. In the opening scene, we see two people walking through a forest as they laugh and talk. In the next scene, we see an old man reading aloud from an old book as he tells his story to some children. He tells them how he had been neglected by his family since being born into poverty and how they refuse to feed him even though they have plenty of food themselves because it's better for their reputation that people think them generous than rich. He then tells the story of how his great grandfather was hired by a rich man who desperately wanted to get an heir. One day, the rich man said he would give his new wife (the great grandfather's grandmother) anything she wished for, and she wished for a beautiful dinner with delicious food and wine. As they were eating, she asked her husband if he liked it and when he said yes she said: "Don't eat it". So he did not and the expression of longing on his face made her realize that this was what her husband liked best of all, being deprived. The rich man died soon after and the old man's great grandfather refused to take the gold that was offered to him in exchange for marrying in his young age. He thought about it for a moment and then said, in a matter-of-fact way, "I've never liked gold". The rich man's wife worked very hard in order to make ends meet but when she got pregnant her parents left her alone. Thus, without any help from anyone she had to give birth to the couple's child all alone at home. When she went into labor she cried out saying that this child was not of her husband's but of the rich man. The rich man came and offered the child as a substitute for his own son who was sick with smallpox. The old man's great grandfather refused and said that this was not the family he had been given. The movie showed us some of the problems of prejudice, hatred, greed, betrayal and survival in Thai society today. We see how people are so concerned about saving face that they will lie to keep it. We see how they make up reasons to blame others in order to cover their own mistakes. Another important fact in the movie was the character of the old man's great grandfather himself. The movie, in many ways, is his story too. He is an underdog who has low status but is full of integrity and nobility. He does not have much going for him but he still has a sense of duty and responsibility. The message of this story is that we should never forget our duty to help those who are less fortunate than us and never forget what we have learned from our elders. cfa1e77820
