Tafsir al-Manar is a commentary written by Ibn Katheer, a Muslim scholar from the Middle Ages. This tafsir consists of 15,000 sayings as understood by Ibn Katheer as representing the meaning of the Qur'an. The author offers his interpretation of the Qur'an in an attempt to explain its meaning and often includes other Islamic sources that he found useful. Tafsir al-Manar contains over 40 volumes and over 1,000,000 words in length. Ibn Kathir spent most of his life in Mecca and Medina in a Muslim community in a time when the dominance of the scholars dictated that they would be in a position to interpret the Qur'an. Ibn Katheer is one of the largest contributors to the discussion on Qur'anic exegesis. Researchers have found that Qur'anic commentaries influenced authors who wrote on alternative religions, especially Christian missionaries. A variety of Christian authors quote their sources not only by Ibn Katheer but also by other hadith (saying) commentators, such as al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, al-Suyuti and others. These were common works among Christian authors of the 19th century. There were many works that discussed the Qur'anic commentary of Ibn Katheer, one of which is written by a Lutheran theologian whose name is Carl Ernst. Ernst quotes a work by a Moltmann that was written in the 1970s. In this work Moltmann states that "The fact that a commentary by a Muslim author who belonged to an earlier evangelical mission in Kuwait is still in use in the United States today shows how much trust this commentary enjoys even among evangelicals." Ernst also discussed how he discovered other works by Muslim authors when he was working at the University of Chicago library. Ernst also mentions how his research was done from the 1920s until the 1960s. In a recent article, Imam Abdul-Haqq M. Ansaar writes how Ibn Kathir's tafsir, Tafsir al-Manar, was a favorite source of Christian missionaries in Arabia and Sudan. According to Ansaar, missionaries clearly distinguished themselves from traditional Muslim scholars by being more receptive to Ibn Katheer's tafsir as a work that could be used for missionary purposes without diverging from orthodox Islam. In particular, Christians were able to use this source as one which "confirms their own interpretation of the Qur'an. Christian missionaries in the Arabic-speaking world used Ibn Katheer's tafsir to convey their own interpretation of the Qur'an... [I]n a context where a Muslim reader is more likely to be familiar with a Qur'anic commentary, a Christian reader is more likely to know Ibn Kathir's tafsir. This means that Christian missionaries can make use of it without diverging from Islam." This use of Ibn Kathir was not limited to Arabs; Ansaar reports that "Christian missionaries who were able to translate ibn Kathir's text into Arabic distributed it widely in Sudan and Arabia, even in places where no connection with Christianity existed at all. cfa1e77820
